Anatomy of a Motherboard

A typical four layer motherboard in a Computer shall have the following slots/ports/connectors.CPU socket,DIMM socket,Power supply,fan connector,FDD port,EIDE port,Front panel connector,PS2 connector,USB ports,Serial/Parallel/VGA ports,Sound and game ports,AGP slots,PCI slots,AMR slots etc.

AGP:: Accelerated Graphics Ports- An expansion slot specifically for graphics cards offering high bandwidth.

AMR:: Audio Modem Riser- An expansion slot for audio/modem riser cards.

BIOS:: Basic Input Output System- Communicates between the hardware and the OS, where all the system settings are configured and stored. A BIOS can be upgraded if new features arrive.

CNR :: Communication Network Riser- Supports Local Area Network connectivity.

DIMM :: Dual Inline Memory Module- A 168 pin memory stick, usually SDRAM .

EIDE :: Enhanced Integrated Device Electronics- The standard used for most Hard disks and other stroge devices. Most motherboards can support four EIDE devices.

FSB :: Front Side Bus- The speed at which the CPU communicates with the system memory.

FWP :: Fire Wire Ports- Latest superceding USB ports.10 times more faster transfer.Mainly used for Audio/Video/Image editing.A standard in Apple's G4 computer.

Parallel Port :: Similar to serial ports but with faster bi-directional transfer.Usually used for printers and scanners.

PCI :: Peripheral Component Interconnect- A 32 bit expansion slot used for the majority of expansion cards other than graphicscard.

POST :: Power On Self Test- The first operation that is executed when the system is switched on.Checks the status of the memory, processor and other components,

SCSI :: Small Computer System Interface- Similar to EIDE but catering to more professional market.18 devices can be connected.Transfer rates are superior.

SDRAM :: Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory- Fast system memory that superceded EDO Ram.

Serial Port :: Also known as COM ports , are used to connect peripherals like modems, digital cameras, pda etc..

SLOT 1 :: The CPU connector for early Pentium processors.

SOCKET A :: The CPU connector for AMD Athlon and Duran processors.

SOCKET 370 :: The CPU connector for Intel Celeron and Pentium 3 processors.

SMP :: Symmetric Multi Processing- A configuration where two or more processors share the same memory and system bus.Like Apple Mac/G4.

ULTRA DMA :: An EIDE bus mastering standard that allows burst transfer rate of 33/66/100 Mbytes per second.

USB :: Universal Serial Bus- The successor to serial and parallel ports.USB offers 12Mbits/sec transfer and hot swapability.
